ABOUT THE SHEEP

Boxdale-CompositeIn 2004 embarked on a composite breeding program using stud White Suffolk ewes mated to top White Dorper stud sires to breed what is now referred to as a “Boxdale Composite”.

In the beginning we quickly realised there was a huge variation in the Dorper breed and a myriad of structural faults. We were very careful to only buy the best and proven stud foundation stock to avoid the influx of structural problems that plagued the Dorper industry in the early days.

The resulting lambs were of a large frame, quality carcase, excellent structure, huge growth rates and a very fertile ewe with good mothering ability.

We kept breeding with Stud White Dorper Rams, classing rigorously and the sheep evolved into a large cleanskin animal with a quality carcase and good feet and legs. The composite excels as we are reliably able to sell suckers, Trade weight lambs and heavy export lambs, versatility that isn’t always available within a single breed.

We have clients in both High Rainfall and Pastoral country who are having success with the Boxdale Composite and encourage you to consider this option. The sheep are always available to view please contact us for an appointment.

BoxdaleWhiteDorperIn 2010 we started the Boxdale White Dorper Stud after we were able to secure some 100 exceptional Stud ewes from Burrawang and Highveld Studs. With encouraging results these foundation ewes soon built themselves a clientele and ram sales were strong.

The opportunity was there for us to purchase the Highveld white dorper stud in 2013 as the principals were moving onto another project. We very much respected their genetics and were lucky to be able to choose our pick from the entire stud. We chose 330 type 4 and 5 stud ewes from their flock of over 800.

The rest they say is history, mixing these ewes with our breeding principals we have continued to produce excellent results. Rams that are masculine, clean, sound and can stand up to any environment while producing excellent carcass lambs. Ewes that are feminine, fertile and great mothers producing in excess of 150% lambs per year under an 8 month joining cycle.

BoxdaleDorperIn 2013 it was decided that we should breed some traditional Dorpers and see what all the fuss has been about. The Dorper has been outselling the White Dorper for a number of years and we were keen to see for ourselves what was driving this demand.
The decision was made to travel to the Dell Dorper sale to secure outstanding foundation stock and we were certainly excited by the prospects when our first Black head lambs were classed.

We continued with these genetics and purchased top quality stud ewes from Burrawang and Kaya. The result is a flock of around 200 high class ewes that continue to impress. Our breeding principals have always been to breed sound, hardy and clean animals under commercial conditions and these sheep have definitely ticked all the boxes. With each drop we are impressed with the weight for age, conformation and breeding ability, 40 ewes joined continuously for 12 months marked 99 lambs I think that speaks for itself.
